Waheguru ji ka kalsa, Waheguru ji ke fata.
Thank you for being with us this afternoon. We have the humble honour to be speaking about our dearest grandmother, Maji today.

In the beginning, there were sounds: Maji’s voice in our childhoods, teaching us to recite the root verse:
Ik Onkar. Sat Naam. Karta Purakh. Nirbhau. Nirvair. Akal Murat. Ajuni Saibhang. Gurprashad. Jap. Aad Sach. Jugad Sach. Hai Bhi Sach. Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach.

Gurbachan Kaur Sehra was born on July 5th 1918 to Bhula Singh and Javali Kaur Bambra in the village of Khondola. Maji was the middle child, among 6 siblings; 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Maji was blessed with 7 children, and together with Babji they created a vast empire. Children to grandchildren to great grandchildren to great great grandchildren. Her sons and daughters span far and wide crossing vast seas and oceans from Canada, to India to Africa.

Home was always where Maji was. To us grandchildren, she become our best friend. She was our GMJ, our Grandma Jones. She was the pillar of wisdom for our whole existence, our constant companion and our source of truth. As we made our way into adulthood and experienced real pain, real disappointment, and real fear for the first time, we began to understand her magnificence, not just as a grandmother but as a human being who lived and breathed truth even in the face of the worst suffering.

Maji lived every moment in this deep calm and love for the beauty in the world – and she cultivated that beauty around her, in the blooming garden she kept and in the hearts of her friends and family. Her humble spirit and kind soul attracted everyone around her. Her million-dollar smile was the cherry on top. Why else would so many visitors, women and men, young and old, flow into her room day after day for her company and love?

Maji laid out the foundation of what it means to be family; always being there for each other, caring for each other, and loving each other. Her perfect day was when the whole family was together. Aunts, uncles, cousins, everybody together under one roof. Maji may have left us but we will not forget the importance of family. Whether in happiness or sadness, we can always count on family and this is the important teaching she instilled in us.

In the past month as Maji’s health began to rapidly decline, our biggest fear of losing our dearest Maji was becoming a reality. Tears would roll down our faces various times throughout the days. Maji was taken from us on June 4th 2019 at 3:30am with her precious Amani by her side, holding her and telling her she is there for her as she took her last breath.
Maji definitely chose wisely, one of the strongest of us all.

As our hearts are filled with sadness, deep inside, Maji has also planted a seed of strength in all of us, we know that she is just on the other side of all our grief. She will be within each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren forever. We will take the time to reflect and celebrate the life that Maji lived. Her life was a perfect miracle. We will try to live up to her example: her deep faith in God, her constant kindness, her discipline in mind and body, and her fearlessness in life.

Maji, we will feel you in the root of us, so that everything that we do, you do. Everyone who knows us, will know you. Our children will know you and their children’s children will know you. There is nothing that can separate us. There is nothing that can separate those who love one another unconditionally. In that case, since this is not goodbye, we grandchildren have one last prayer to offer Maji’s spirit as it goes blazing up into the heart of God.

As Siri Guru Arjun Dev Ji writes in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib:
'The Creator Lord created this creation.
It comes and goes, subject to the Will of the Infinite Lord.
No one dies; no one is capable of dying.
The soul does not perish; it is imperishable.'

May you rest in an eternity of peace Maji, until the day our paths cross again in another lifetime.

Waheguru ji ka kalsa, Waheguru ji ke fata.
