Joseph Edmund Claxton
August 29th, 1948 – January 5th, 2020

Surrounded by his beloved wife, Shaun, and children, Janine and Mike, Joe passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 5th, 2020, after a three-year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He will be deeply missed by his wife and children, as well as his son-in-law, Josh, daughter-in-law, Jen, and grandchildren, Ethan, Casey, and Harper. Joe will also be missed by his larger family, Tracey (Kenny), Jenny (Amber), and Kevin; cousin Joey; brothers-in-law, Michael (Rene), Kevin (Leo), and Chris (Diane); sisters-in-law, Caroline, Trina (Jack), and Mandy (Andy); nephews, Allan, Jack, Stein, Joseph, Henry, and George; and nieces Sarah, Louise, Claire, Chloe, and Amber. Joe was loved and will be missed by many family members and friends.

Joe was born in Kingston, Jamaica on August 29th, 1948 to Gloria Easby and Joseph Claxton Sr. They moved to England when Joe was a young child, but were soon separated when Gloria was quarantined for tuberculosis and Joseph Sr. was captured in the Korean War and held as a Prisoner of War. Joe and his younger sister, Anne, lived together in an orphanage until Joe was 5-years-old. They went to live with their dear Aunt Dorothy before reuniting with their parents, as well as their youngest sister, Angela.

Joe was raised in Twickenham, and eventually Hanworth in England. He studied engineering and went on to become a mechanical engineer. While working in a pub, he met his beloved wife, Shaun, and they quickly became engaged and married. They immigrated to Canada in 1975 and settled in Brampton. Joe had a career as a mechanical engineer for close to thirty years.

Heavily influenced by his British heritage, Joe enjoyed British bitters and ale (specifically Old Speckled Hen), a good football match, the Queen’s annual Christmas speech, Doc Martin and Fawlty Towers, and cooking traditional English breakfasts. Joe could often be found listening to Pink Floyd, in a deep state of mind, and remarking “this is a fantastic record.” He had a dry sense of humor and was often ready with a witty joke or punchline.

Joe enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, doing construction projects with Joey, walking his dog Louis, playing family games of Risk, and hosting family gatherings. Joe was most happy when he was surrounded by family, both immediate and extended, and often emphasized the importance of prioritizing family above all else.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, sisters Anne and Angela, Aunt Dorothy, and his cherished dog, Louis. Although Joe will be dearly missed by those who loved and knew him, his family takes comfort in the idea that he has been reunited with those he lost too soon.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in Joe’s honor. Please visit if you wish to donate.

Rest In Peace, Joe. We love you.
